i need to get you to comment on to harry reid. this weekend talking about more taxes. he says, the american people are on his side. here he is. >> the american people don't believe in this bustier things. we believe that he rich should contribute. we believe we should fill those tax loopholes, get rid of them, i should say, and t that is whee we need to go. gerri: do you agree? >> no, i don't. john kennedy did not agree. ronald reagan did not agree. they did not agree back in the 1920's. it is never worked in the history of this country raising taxes to bring in more revenue. by the way, the revenue is projected for this year, over two and half trillion dollars. that's more than we took in last year, more than we took in in 2007 and 2008. it is always and has always been a spending problem in washington d.c. look at what is going on in california. wall street loves what california is doing, but remember, the people who voted to raise taxes in california made it retroactive, so what happened is nobody could do anything tget away from the extra increase in taxes, but now

so i don't -- you know, the story of the last two years is that, you know, john boehner, harry reid, barack obama, always find some way to pull a deal out of the fire. so it would be silly to bet against that, but i agree with charles. it's harder in this case to see -- i think you can draw it up on paper, but it's harder to see where the parties come together. the reasonable thing to do would be to say, let's cut the amount we're going to be spending in half and let's agree on doing a little means testing to medicare, which they're both in favor of and let's not get so focused on absolute dollar figures. i am pretty sure that's not going to happen. >> the clock is ticking. gloria, appreciate it, charles and ross, thank you. >>> a family lost at sea off the coast of san francisco. and a murder trial making the casey anthony look, well, boring. x-rated evidence, too many lies to count. plus a defendant who won a singing contest from prison. it's all bizarre. we'll be right back. obster taco. the bar harbor bake is really worth trying. what's maddening about this, to watch harry reid complain about it is a little much. he had a chance to do something and he bailed. he basically had this gentleman's agreement with mitch mcconnell. the president is saying we now have this de facto 60-vote rule. exactly. that's what advocates o reforming the filibuster in a muscular way you write in the rules are saying this is the tendency that there is nothing to interrupt this tendency right now. there's nothing in the norms of the institution. there's nothing in the actual rule, short of changing them, that is going to stop this. there's all the incentives for more of this to happen. so i'm sorry, it's a little hard for me to be particularly sympathetic to harry reid when he gets up there saying oh my god, look at these people abusing the filibuster. yeah, that's been the case, you had a chance to do something about it and didn't. >> republicans look at jim demint retire and replaced immediately with a possibly crazier senator from texas, ted cruz. john mccain was outraged that cruz questioned the patriotism, the l

and the nra has been kind of close to harry reid. they have not been adversarial to one another for years. and there is the rural culture of firearms in this country. but from what i'm told last night, they're going to try to get as much as they can on this. and the president is all in on this. the democrats are all in on it. it now comes down to the votes. house speaker john boehner was pressed about giving people the votes they deserve on gun safety today. here it is. >> how do we address violence in our society, how do we take meaningful steps to reduce that violence? and as i made clear for weeks, when the senate -- if the senate acts, we'll be happy to take a look at what they do. >> neera, is this a failure of leadership for boehner to just kick it over to the senate, we'll see what they do first? what do you make of that? >> i mean, i don't think americans define leadership by saying things like when the senate acts, we'll see what they can do. i think that really -- that kind of lackadaisical attitude towards something that p
